The “Strangeland + Vehicles” project enhances the virtual world of Strangeland by introducing a variety of vehicles, including a flying car that can both drive on roads and fly like a drone. It aims to study user interactions with these vehicles, particularly self-driving ones, to better understand human-machine coexistence in virtual settings. Key features include an intuitive dashboard, smooth transitions between driving and flying modes, and comprehensive user testing to refine the experience.

Objectives

  • Dual Functionality of the flying vehicle: Functions as a regular car on the road and transitions to a drone-like vehicle for flying.
  • Interior and Control Design: Incorporates a typical steering wheel with an innovative Xbox-style controller embedded for flying. The controller can be docked back into the steering wheel after use.
  • Realistic Modeling and Movement: Detailed modeling of the vehicle for realistic movement in the VR/AR environment.
  • Project website: maintenance and keep track of the on-going process

How it works

Functionality

  • A key (button) to switch between the flying mode and driving mode
  • A gaming pad controller to control flying
  • Wheel and pedal to control driving

Design

  • Exterior model – XPENG AEROTH X2
  • Interior model – ASKA flying car
